The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekov - Costume and Set Design
The production is set in 1978, the tumultuous year it was first performed at Riverside Studios. The set draws on the textiles of the 1970s mixed with the faded grandeur of the Edwardian era. Ghosts of grand former lives, and former productions, are echoed in the layered design. Bold lighting contrasts with the beauty of the cherry orchard, made from willow and crochet doilies. The costumes acknowledge the shift from the Russian folk inspired dressing of the 1970s to incoming Thatcherite yuppies.
The first of five plays in weekly rep by Flywheel Theatre Company at Riverside Studios as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations.
